It’s true… I remember Tony Robinson did a series called ‘The Worst Jobs In History’, and that was one that came up, as many of those hermits weren’t allowed to wash or have any contact with anyone for the duration of their employment.

Back to Discworld, I believe the thing about getting a receipt when you were was also based on history.  I can’t remember the amounts, but at one time it was the law in England that if were caught having stolen below a certain amount you were sentenced to a year or two in prison, but anything above that amount got you sentenced to hang.  And so muggers used to leave receipts for everything they stole to show to the police if they got caught.
