Why is “Dick” the nickname for people called “Richard”?

Why is “Dick” the nickname for people called “Richard”?

Nothing to do with willies; that doesn’t seem to have started until around the nineteenth century, whereas Dick = Richard has been around much longer.  It’s  probably just that other short forms of Richard are things like Rich and Rick, and then people started rhyming those to things like Hick and Dick.
