Ridley Scott: Humans Could Never Survive an Encounter With Extraterrestrials

Here’s the article.  Nothing new really; since HG Wells’ ‘War of the Worlds’ over a hundred years ago we’ve imagined aliens destroying us, based on the idea that whenever an advanced civilization comes into contact with a less advanced one, the less advanced one is doomed because that’s what’s always happened among humans.  I don’t think there’s really any reason to assume that aliens would be like that – humans are just one example of intelligent life, although admittedly the only one we currently know.  But really we’re afraid of ourselves.

I believe the same is true of AI. Even if we did ever, for some weird reason, create an AI capable of destroying us, why do we assume that it would?  There’s no reason for it to be inherently evil.  In fact, in a sense, it would be the offspring of our species… and that’s the problem, isn’t it?  We’re just a really bad example to follow.
