Perhaps because I’m autistic, I’ve always been attracted to the trope of the intelligent alien in fiction. An alien who comes to earth and doesn’t quite get how things work here, and possibly some hilarious misunderstandings ensue making things awkward for themselves and the humans trying to help them.
But as writer I think there is often an advantage to being an outsider observing the things normally taken for granted by people. Observational comedy, for example, is essentially about breaking down things most people consider normal and mundane and wouldn’t otherwise think much about, and pointing out that actually those things would look weird and a bit silly to anyone who wasn’t raised with them as the norm.
I loooovvveee stories like that! Stories recently from the whole “Earth is space Australia” thread have been my favorite things. It makes me look at things from a completely different perspective and I think that’s awesome.
That what was what I was thinking about when I wrote this too. Sadly, the only other example of the genre I could think of at the time was Suburban Commando, which is really not the best (it just got into my head and wouldn’t go away):
I mean why is that guy miming in an alleyway anyway?
